Experimental Computational Philosophy: shedding new lights on (old) philosophical debates
نویسندگان
چکیده
Philosophy can benefit from experiments performed in a laboratory for philosophical experimentation (SophoLab). To illustrate the power of Experimental Computational Philosophy, we set up and ran several experiments on a part of Harsanyi’s theory on utilitarianism. During decomposition and translation of this theory in the experimental setting of Sopholab, we discovered that it is underspecified. We filled in some blank spots and found out that information and its costs are key in the effectiveness of act and rule utilitarianism. We also identified three further elements that have particular influence on the effectiveness of both strands of utilitarianism: group size of agents, decision-making around uncertainty, and social culture towards particular types of actions. We conclude having shown that setting up computational philosophical experiments is a useful way to gain new and deeper insights in existing argumentations used in old (and new) philosophical debates.

متن کاملA New Role for Experimental Work in Metaphysics
Recent work in philosophy could benefit from paying greater attention to empirical results from cognitive science involving judgments about the nature of our ordinary experience. This paper describes the way that experimental and theoretical results about the nature of ordinary judgments could—and should—inform certain sorts of enquiries in contemporary philosophy, using metaphysics as an exemp...

متن کاملThe Relevance of Experimental Epistemology to Traditional Epistemology
Experimental epistemology is the use of the experimental methods of the cognitive sciences to shed light on debates within epistemology, the philosophical study of knowledge and rationally justified belief. A variety of misconceptions about this experimental approach conspire to make it far more controversial than it should be. For example, no experimental philosopher has ever claimed that expe...
متن کاملA new philosophy of man and humanism
The theoretical basis for the new philosophy was laid by the American philosopher James Joseph Dagenais (1923-1981), who came to the conclusion that philosophical anthropology is not a science, but a domain unto itself, and that a philosophy of man can only come about as a joint undertaking of all sciences, in which the object of study must be man himself. The final explanation of man lies outs...
